V 1. These are the generations (descendants) of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The sons born to them after the flood, were; Shem is younger than Japheth, but is listed first because he is the one chosen of God. Since Ham was under a curse, Japheth would normally be the one to receive the birthright. The birthright was a double portion of the father's wealth, headship of the family, priesthood of the family. These rights normally went to the oldest son. V 2. The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. V 3. The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. These grandsons of Japheth settled by the Caspian Sea in Russia. V 4. The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. The Greeks are descendants of Javan. V 5. From these, the coast land peoples spread. These above are the sons of Japheth in their lands, each with his own language, by their families, in their nations. Medians, Greeks, Romans, Russians and Gauls are the descendants. Most will appear in the end time under Gog. Ez.38:39 and Zec. 9:13 We know these people as Indo-European. The present day names of these countries, Turkey, Iran, Greece, and Russia. V 6. The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. V 7. The sons of Cush: Sheba, Havillah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan. V 8. Cush became the father of Nimrod; he was the first to be a mighty man on the earth. Cush means black, he was a great grandson of Ham. These people settled in an area we know as Ethiopia. V 9. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord. V 10. The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Culneh, in the land of Shinar [in Babylonia]. The land of Shinar is the old name for Southern Babylonia, it was afterward called Chaldea. This is the first mention of Nimrod. Some scholars think that he hunted men for sport. They arrive at this conclusion because of scriptures like: Jeremiah 16:16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. In the above portion of scripture, God was speaking of the judgments that were to come on the then scattered Israel. These hunters were men, who through history, have hated the chosen people of God. They were hunters of men. While there is no proof that Nimrod hunted men for sport, it is evident that he hunted them for the purpose of persuading them to follow his ways. It is also clear that his ways were in opposition to the ways of God. In those days wild beasts were numerous and became a menace to life. Nimrod excelled at hunting them. He was the first to establish cities, with walls, to protect the inhabitants. He became a leader and benefactor of mankind. Then he turned men to himself. The Jewish historian, Josephus, says, "Nimrod persuaded mankind against ascribing their happiness to God." He turned man to himself. A new religion formed. This cult claimed the power to reveal divine secrets and have divine wisdom. The purpose of the religion was to rule the world. The wife of Nimrod, Queen Semiramis, was worshipped as Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. Prostitution was required in this religion. Another attempt by Satan to counterfeit the true worship of God, and corrupt the seed of woman. Nimrod was the builder of a very large and grand Babylon. It incorporated suburbs, had grand court yards, many shrines and chapels to various god’s. In the western chamber there was a couch to for the main god which was 7 feet wide by 15 feet long. The main tower was in the center of all the chambers. It was 300feet square at the base and 110 feet tall. The second level was 260 feet square and 60 feet square. The third level was 200 feet square and 20 feet high. The fourth level was 170 feet square by 20 feet high. The fifth level was 140 feet square by 20 feet high. The sixth level was 110 square by 20feet high. The seventh level 80 feet long by 60 wide and 50 feet high, on it was a sanctuary for Bel-Merodach. The total height was 300 feet. The same as the width of the base. In the year 1876 there were some Babylonian tablets discovered and one tablet read: in one night the gods threw down all the people had built, scattered the people and made strange their speech. V 11. Out of the land [Nimrod] went forth into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah. V 12. And Resen, between Nineveh and Calah; all these [suburbs combined to form] the great city. Babylon was built by Nimrod about 2000 years before Jesus was born. Years
later, when Nebuchadnezzar became king, he used forced labor (slaves from
the descendants of Shem) to build his Babylon. It was 14 miles square,(56
miles to walk the square at the base of the brick wall) the wall was 311
feet high and 87 feet wide. There was a moat around the wall, filled with
water from the Euphrates. Inside the outside wall, there was a second wall,
similar to the first, except narrower. The famous hanging gardens were built
for Nebuchadnezzar's queen, and became one of the seven wonders of the
ancient world. |

The main purpose of this list in the Bible is to point out that it is thru Shem that the righteous seed continues. Through Shem's line comes Abraham and then on down to Jesus. |
