Genesis

Chapter Five

V 1. This book----the written record---of the generations of the off-spring of Adam. When God created man He made him in the likeness of God.

This chapter does not include all the off-spring of Adam. It lists the men through whom mankind would continue until the end of time.

V 2. He created them male and female and blessed them, and named them [both] Adam at the time when they were created.

Woman is man with a womb. We must remember that all mankind was wrapped up in Adam. Through him, the sinful nature (the propensity to sin) is passed to all.

V 3. When Adam had lived 130 years he had a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.

There has been debate about Adam's spiritual condition after leaving Eden. This scripture suggests that he accepted the plan of God and lived accordingly. He taught his children the plan of God for redemption. Some rejected the plan. Abel and Seth did not. It is through Seth that the seed will lead to Jesus. Seth means appointed, settled, or placed. The main purpose of this list is to show the line or link between Adam and Noah. Not all of the men were godly but through the line of Seth, we arrive at the godly Noah.

V 4. Adam lived after he had Seth 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

V 5. So altogether Adam lived 930 years, and he died.

Adam lived 56 years into Lamech's life. There was a living witness of God's grace and mercy on the earth until the father of Noah was born.

V 6. When Seth was 105 years old, Enosh was born.

Enosh means frailty, or weakness. He had a tendency to sin. He also may have had the good sense to seek forgiveness. The record does not say. Since the righteous seed continued through him, it is likely that he did. At the birth of Enosh, Grandpa Adam would have been 235 years old.

V 7. Seth lived after the birth of Enosh 807 years, and had other sons and daughters.

V 8. So Seth lived 912 years, and he died.

V 9. When Enosh was 90 years old, Kenan was born to him.

At the time of Kenan's (or Cainan) birth, great grandpa Adam would have been 325 years old. Kenan means acquisition.

V 10. Enosh lived after the birth of Kenan 815 years, and had other sons and daughters.

V 11. So Enosh lived 905 years, and he died.

V 12. When Kenan was 70 years old, Mahalalel was born.

Mahalalel means God be praised. The joy of the Lord was still present in the family. Great grandpa Seth was 265 years old. Great great grandpa Adam was 395 years old.

V 13. Kenan lived after the birth of Mahalalel 840 years, and had other sons and daughters.

V 14. So Kenan lived 910 years, and he died.

V 15. When Mahalalel was 65 years old, Jared was born.

The name Jared means descent. Adam is now 460 years old.

V 16. Mahalalel lived after the birth of Jared 830 years, and had other sons, and daughters.

V 17. So Mahalalel lived 895 years, and he died.

V 18. When Jared was 162 years old, Enoch was born.

Enoch means dedicated. Adam was 622 years old. Seth 492. Enoch was a prophet.

V 19. Jared lived after the birth of Enoch 800 years, and had other sons and daughters.

The phrase other sons and daughters: It is made plain there were others to pass on the family name. The men through whom the seed led to Jesus, were chosen of God. God’s method for choosing is a simple one. Abel, Enoch, and Noah are referred to as godly men not because they were perfect but because they believed God. Hebrews 11:6 says that he that comes to God must first believe He is. It is faith that please God.

This list does not cover everyone who lived between Adam and Noah. It is concerned with the main links, showing the continuing line of those who trusted God and lived by His rules.

V 20. So Jared lived 962 years, and he died.

V 21. When Enoch was 65 years old, Methuselah was born.

The name Methuselah means, when he dies judgment shall fall.
Adam is now 687 years old.

V 22. Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

It appears that Enoch had a vision or revelation from God at the time of Methuselah's birth. This led him to name his son as a warning to mankind. Enoch prophesied about half way between Adam and Abraham. It was a time of multiplied evil on the earth. He and God were in agreement. Two cannot walk together unless they be agreed. Amos 3:3. There is a quote from a later prophecy of Enoch in Jude verses 14-15, concerning the second coming of Jesus.

The book of Enoch is one of the books that have been labeled apocryphal and is not received as having authority by much of the Christian world.

V 23. So all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

V 24. And Enoch walked in [habitual fellowship] with God; and he was not, for God took him [home with Him].

A little girl telling the story of Enoch's translation, told it like this. "Enoch and God used to take long walks together. One day they walked a long time, and God said, "Enoch you must be tired. Why don't you come to my house and rest?"

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Two people are mentioned in the Word, who did not die. One is Enoch, the other Elijah. Both men lived and prophesied in the midst of great wickedness. How does one manage to stay cleansed in the midst of great evil? The recorded method of the priests was to cleanse themselves before the ministry at the altar, then to examine themselves at the end of the day in the polished laver and remove the soil of the day. Just as the priests of old were subjected to problems as they ministered, we also are bombarded with unbelief as we deal with the un-cleansed on a regular basis. We must also regard ourselves in the mirror of the water of God’s word, mornings and evenings so we can be empowered for service and be cleansed of the days soil.

Enoch prophesied half way between Adam and Abraham. Elijah prophesied half way between Abraham and Christ. Both were taken to heaven in their natural bodies. Enoch and Elijah are thought to be the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation 11:3 They are types of the Church. The Church (the body of Christ) lives in the midst of wickedness. The Church is to prophesy of the coming judgment. Jude 14-15 The Church will be translated. It will rise to meet Jesus in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive <and> remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The word, translated, means to carry a across, to bear up, to remove, or to change from one place to another. This relates also to our present standing before God. When we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are translated.

Colossians 1:13 who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated <us> into the kingdom of his dear Son:

We were in the kingdom of darkness. Now we are in the kingdom of light. Praise His Name!

V 25. When Methuselah was 187 years old, Lamech was born to him.

Adam was 874 years old. The name Lamech means conqueror

V 26. Methuselah lived after the birth of Lamech 782 years, and had other sons and daughters.

V 27. So Methuselah lived 969 years, and he died.

V 28. When Lamech was 182 years old, a son was born.

V 29. He named him Noah, saying This one shall bring us relief and comfort from our work and the [grievous] toil of our hands, due to the ground being cursed by the Lord.

The name Noah means comfort and rest, but it was not the type of comfort that Lamech envisioned. At the birth of Noah, Methuselah was 369 years old.

V 30. Lamech lived after the birth of Noah 595 years, and had other sons and daughters.

V 31. So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

Lamech died five years before his father Methuselah.

32. After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

This list is repeated in 1 Chronicles 1:1-4 and in Luke 3:36-38 but they are very difficult to compare. Because the record is so condensed, we sometimes forget that a long time passed between Adam and the flood of Noah. This record covers more than 1600 years. Finis Dake lists this time period as being 1657 years long, Ushers chronology says between 1400 and 1650

Over and over in this portion of scripture we read that they lived and they died. It is impressed upon us that death of the body is a part of life. No one is immune, youth comes to an end and the body wears out

The apostle James says that our lives are but a mist or vapor that is visible for a little while and then vanishes into thin air. James 1:14. The only things that makes our lives more than a vapor are the things that flow from a heart of gratitude toward God.. We all come to this earth with a specific part to play, a part that no one else can fulfill. Since every person is a mere breath, a passing guest and a temporary resident on the earth, what will our legacy be to those who are left behind when we leave? Our aim should be to be remembered as one who reaches out to the needy in body, spirit and mind. One who speaks with the law of kindness in our tongues, warning away fear and doubt. Giving godly counsel and instruction, offering to all, the words of life. Proverbs 31.

Why do you think people lived so long in those days?
