Numbers 13:1-3 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them. So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel."
Num 13:23-33 "Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there. And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan. Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we."
And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."
God said, go take a look at the land I am giving you. Thatís a promise. So the leaders of the people went to take a look, and in spite of the promise they did not see the possibility. They only saw the obstacles. They reported that there were giants in the land. Yes it was brimming with good things, but ten of the twelve were small thinkers in a small place. It wasnít what they were, that held them back, it was what they thought they were not. They thought they were not winners. Only two men of the twelve kept their eyes on the promise of God. It is interesting to note that how they perceived themselves, is how the giants perceived them. Lack of confidence in God shows, not only to others but also to Satan.
Today, we are going to learn about thinking big in small places. You see, it doesnít make any difference what the giants think of you, what matters is what YOU think of yourself. The book of Proverbs says that as a man thinks in his heart so is he. Most of us have spent our lives thinking wrong. A popular public speaker, Zig Ziglar, calls it stinking thinking.
The Bible teaches us that the best and fastest way to change from small thinking to big thinking is first to be born again. When we are born again we receive a recreated spirit. We become a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and at this point we become like the little train in the nursery rhyme. We start chugging along saying I think I can, then according to Romans 12:1-2 we renew our minds by the word of God and then we begin to say, I know I can, I know I can.
In order to become big thinkers we need to concentrate on our assets instead of our liabilities. There are many examples of big thinkers. Caleb, said, "we are well able to take it". He had learned to concentrate on his assets and not on his liabilities. His main asset was his faith in the word of God. He was probably there when God said to Moses, "Is the Lordís hand waxed short? Thou shall see now whether my word shall come to pass to you or not." These words were spoken more than once during the ministry of Moses.
Abraham and Sarah were big thinkers in a small place they dared to let people laugh at them because they started using a big thinkers vocabulary. Speaking words that bring on an image of victory.
David came out of the smallest tribe in Israel. The job he had was the bottom of the line in the family, lowest on the totem pole, but David was a big thinker in a small place. He thought the bigger the problem, the greater the victory. Canít you just hear his brothers? "Now David, be reasonable, this dude is big, there is no way to win. Give it up David, weíll move over, there is room in the frady hole for you." It doesnít say so, but I can imagine David saying, "Faith isnít reasonable, God delights to do the impossible. The bigger the problem the greater the victory. Let me at him."
David became a hero, he wasnít born one. He went on to become the greatest King that Israel ever had, co-authored one of the biggest books in the Bible. He was a big thinker in a very small place.
Jesus, was born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, in a land that was no bigger than the state of Illinois. Judged by the size of the world, that is definitely a small place. He went to a small country school and worked in a carpenter shop. Small places, but He knew who He was, and He changed the world. He IS the BIGGEST thinker OF ALL TIMES, HE CALLS UNLOVABLE US LOVEABLE. Even in a world where it is estimated that 48% of the people are not even sure God exists, He calls unlovable people, lovable.
In a more recent time, there was the Wright brothers, they were big thinkers in a small place. A place called Kitty Hawk, which is about 12 miles from Collington which is a few miles from Nags head, Iíd call that a small place, wouldnít you? A small place in North East, North Carolina. When Wilbur and Orville first succeeded in flying the machine that they called an airplane and others called a crazy contraption, they sent a telegram to their sister in Dayton, Ohio. It said, "first sustained flight today 12-17-1903 in the air for 59 seconds. Hope to be home for Christmas. The excited sister took it to the editor of the paper who turned out to be a small thinker because the next day big headlines in the paper announced. POPULAR BICYCLE MERCHANTS TO BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. Because he was a small thinker he missed one of the biggest scoops in history.
Orville and Wilbur were in a small place but the small place wasnít in them. They were big thinkers in a small place and they changed the world.
Remember the Kentucky Colonel? His claim to fame was a roadside fried chicken stand.
Today, there is a big fellow with and unusual haircut who calls himself Mr. T. Mr. T was raised in a ghetto. When he was asked about his successful career and how he managed to get out of the ghetto, Mr. T said, "I was in the ghetto, but the ghetto wasnít in me." He is a big thinker.
We can do the same thing, individually and as a group. Itís not what we are that holds us back, itís what we think we are not.
How do we become big thinkers, In the midst of a small situation? We concentrate on our biggest assets, the promises of God. Then we continue to play until we win. Godís promises are not dependant upon when or where we were born, what school we went to, who we went to school with, what street we live on, what city we live in, what color our skin is, how young we are. We must concentrate on our assets and not our liabilities. There may be times when doubt tries to overwhelm us, but our main asset is never overwhelmed. Jesus has promised never to leave us or forsake us. From the human standpoint it may seem impossible, like Abraham and Sarah, past experience may say it is impossible, but they went ahead and had a child anyway.
How do we become big thinkers in the midst of a small situation? We must concentrate on our assets and use a big thinkers vocabulary. We must avoid words that create in ourselves and in the minds of others images of defeat and failure. Do you realize that we think in pictures instead of words. For example, if I say car, very few would think of the word car, most would thing of a particular car, probably their own.
Do you know that science has proved that our minds can convince our bodies that something is wrong with it? Think sickness long enough and symptoms will begin to appear. It happens to medical students all the time, they call it interns disease. Some time ago I saw a film where a guy was hanging from a steel beam high up on a building, the camera flashed downward, the fingers slipped, the beam swayed. If a monitor had been on my body, it would have registered just as if I had been hanging on a steel beam by my fingers nails, 50 stories above the earth. When the hands slipped in that film, my stomach lurched..
Our minds and bodies react to words and pictures, so the Bible says that what so ever is good, pure, lovely, think on these things Philippians 4:8 Dwell on the scripture that "with God, all things are possible." Mark 10:27 and then give the good report.
Ever wonder why Joshua and Caleb are said to have given the good report? Itís because they said the same words that God said. Isaiah 46:10 tells us that God speaks the end results from the beginning. Romans 4:17 tells us that God calls those thing that be not as thought they already were.
Do we want our children or grandchildren to be successful, then we must speak the result that we desire. Tell them that they are smart, speak the results that we desire, tell our mates that they are terrific, they are handsome, they are beautiful, they are special and smart, speak the results you desire, think big.
How do we become big thinkers in small situations. We must enlarge our visions, see what we can be, not just what is, or appears to be. Read what God says, get His view of our lives, look beyond the circumstances.
Refuse to allow what we see to rule us, decide to give a good report, choose to believe God.
We are to have a vision and work toward that goal. We are to not be satisfied with just getting through this area of our lives, have a goal of being the best, whatever it is.
Our future success is spoken of in the Word of God, the book of Job
Here we are in a small place and we have the choice, we can be big thinkers in a small place or we can be small thinkers in a small place.
We are concentrate on our assets, the promises of God. We are to use a big thinkers vocabulary. Speaking word pictures that give the image of victory. We are to have an enlarged vision, seeing beyond what is, to what shall be, and we are to work toward that goal, that vision.
God calls all of us to be big thinkers. It is not to late. Caleb was 85
years old the second time he said, with God, we are well able to take the
land. Ps.92:12-14. God says in His Word that if we will believe Him, we
shall see His glory.
Eph 3:20 "Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us."
No matter how big we think, He is able to do more than we think. BE A BIG THINKER.
Acts 20:32 "Now brethren I commend you to the word of His grace which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among them that believe."
