Carpe Diem

Ps. 90:10,12
"The days of our years are threescore years and ten; (seventy years) and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, (eighty years) yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. So teach us to number our days that we may apply our heart unto wisdom."

A while back, I heard a man say that we should figure out where we would be 20 years from now and begin to order our lives accordingly. I did a few quick calculations and came to the conclusion that heaven would be my dwelling place. Many of us do not have 20 years of life on this earth to go, so we need to order our lives to make sure that we are laying up treasures in heaven. Even if you are younger, try this on for size, Jesus may come back at any time.

The words Carpe Diem are Latin and they mean to seize the day, or in our usage, it means to make the most of each day. After thinking about verse ten, I decided that perhaps we should seize and squeeze the moment instead of thinking of a whole day.

The preacher I was listening to was talking about setting goals and I think he was right, we need goals in order to live productive lives. Without a plan we are just existing, not living, just avoiding death.

We need to stop fretting about being old. Have you ever noticed that age is something we have been pre-occupied with for all of our lives?

A child counts age as nearly 4 and a half or almost fourteen. Every day seems very long and it seems to take forever until you become 21.

Some how that magical age is supposed to allow us to do what ever we want to do. What a shock it is when we discover that we trade our parents, who loved us, for a boss who doesnít.

The shock grows even greater when we find that in the blink of an eye we are over the hill at the age of thirty and thinking and acting like parents. From there we are suddenly aware that we are pushing fifty and wondering how the life begins at forty fun disappeared and some how we missed it. Most of us didnít discover life in the express lane (otherwise known as the high life) because we couldnít find the on ramp. We were to busy doing all the things that our parents did that we swore we would not do.

At this point our thinking changes to "Well hon, we made it to sixty."

At the age of 100 for those who are still around the goal is to make it to lunch. If we make it to 104 we no longer have peer pressure, keeping up with the Jones isnít a problem cause the Jones are no longer around.

Sounds pretty depressing when it is stated this way, doesnít it? But there is hope, God has told me to tell you that the best is yet to come.

Jer. 29:11 says that God has a plan for us, a plan for good and not evil.

So we need to take a look at what we are doing that has moved us away from Godís plan for good.

I was watching a painter on television a while back, as he was painting a beautiful mountain scene on a canvas. He said, "all this beauty lives right here in this brush, all we have to do is shake it out of the brush."

Every day is a fresh new canvas and brush and there is a blessing to be found in every hour, we just need to look for it and shake it out. We get to choose the textures and the colors. That is the true joy of painting, and of living.

You can sit around listening to your arteries harden if you want to, but that isnít living, it is existing. We want to live all of our lives, donít die at sixty and wait to be buried at 85.

Put some effort into life. Think about some one else, be a better spouse, or a better friend, sign up for a class. Develop a new habit (a good one) it only takes 21 times of doing something to turn it into a habit.

There is a blessing to be found if we look for it. A lady I know who is bed fast, recently told me that she never understood what a blessing it was to just walk to the bathroom when ever she wanted to. Are you able to walk? You are blessed.

This same lady does not moan about where she is, she prays for me every day and is blessed when I visit and share with her the results of her prayers. She squeezes the most out of every moment and is determined to live until she dies.

Donít look back on happiness, or think it is only to be found in the future. Our futures arrive a few minutes at a time. We only have now, donít be cheated out of it. Begin now, SOMEDAY is not a day of the week.

Deut 30:11-20 Amplified Bible
11 For this commandment which I command you this day is not too difficult for you, nor is it far off.

12 It is not [a secret laid up] in heaven, that you should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it?

13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it?

14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your mind {and} in your heart, so that you can do it.

15 See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil.

16 [If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which] I command you today, to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land into which you go to possess.

17 But if your [mind and] heart turn away and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them,

18 I declare to you today that you shall surely perish, and you shall not live long in the land which you pass over the Jordan to enter and possess.

19 I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live

20 And may love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him. For He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Get involved with God and His word, then branch out to family, friends, neighbors and strangers.

Shake the beauty out of the brush and on to the canvas of your day.

Get along with people, if you are going to get along with people, you have to do it on purpose. That may mean thinking twice before speaking once. Foot in mouth disease happens on the spur of the moment. Is it true, is it helpful? Is it kind? Will it inspire? Will it improve the situation?

Prov. 16:24 says that pleasant words are like a honeycomb and my Grandmother used to say that you could catch more with honey than you could with vinegar.

What you determine to do and say, may affect dozens of people. You can choose to encourage or discourage. You do not have to attend every argument you are invited to. Better choices make a better life for everyone. Squeeze the moment get the most out of it. Make it good to the last drop. Jesus said, "my joy I leave with you" Donít be selfish, share some of it with others.

Find time. It takes a moment or two for your computer to warm up and get set for use. Use that time wisely, a moment here, and a moment there, used to breathe a prayer for some one does not go un-noticed by God.

Donít wait for people to do good to you, tell people you love them. People do not last forever, squeeze the moment. Donít attend the funeral and weep because you did not tell them you cared for them.

WE OLD FOLKS usually have more regrets for what we have not done, instead of what we have done.

I am 77 years old. It is possible that I could just sit or lie around and still make it to age 78. Any body in reasonable health can grow older. That doesnít require any special talent or ability. The idea is to grow up in to the stature of the fullness of Godís own son.

Make a determined effort to build people up, any old fool can criticize and usually does. Ask yourself, am I shaking beauty from my brush on to the canvas of my day?

Life grows shorter as we speak, lets determine to seize the day and squeeze each moment until we get the most from it.

Ask the lord to give you compassion. Compassion is a divine energy that makes you feel just like He does. Moved to do something good.

Become a member of the MEF. Thatís the mutual encouragement fellowship. Spread joy around, it is like bread cast on the water. It will return to you and you will live a life, that is truly worth living.

Our prayer for ourselves needs to be ......teach me thy ways oh Lord, then will I honor you in the land of the living.
