NAMES OF THE TABERNACLE The tabernacle was called a sanctuary. Exodus 25:8 As we begin our study of the tabernacle, we need to first consider some of the NAMES that it was called and how they related to Jesus. About seven hundred fifty years prior to the birth of Jesus, Isaiah 7:14 prophesied, "a virgin shall bear a son and His name shall be called Immanuel, meaning God with us." Later John 1:14, said "... and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,..." God is indeed in the midst of us. David said of the people of Israel, in Psalm 46:5, "God is in the midst of her." And so He was, in the very center, dwelling in the sanctuary that was made exactly like the model which was shown to Moses upon the mountain, Hebrews 8:5. God gave the plans for the tabernacle to Moses, but he was not to be the builder of it. Exodus 31:1-3, A man from the tribe of Judah, a craftsman, was to oversee the building project. Imagine Moses handing the plans to this guy for the first time. Envision the craftsman looking over the plans, and saying, "Moses, I know God gave you these plans, but I'm in the building trade and some of these things just don't look like they will work. There are some things that we could change, that would make it a whole lot easier to build." But Moses had already been given revelation knowledge concerning the tabernacle, he knew what it represented. Can you hear Moses answering, "No!, No!, No! Don't change a thing. Every board, every little piece of this tabernacle has a special meaning. This tabernacle is going to show us the way into the heavenly sanctuary, the one that is not made with hands. When we finish building the tabernacle, God is going to make it His dwelling place. He is going to be in the midst of us. Revelation knowledge is going to come into the hearts of the people as we put this tabernacle together. Everyone is going to recognize and know the Messiah, who is the lamb of God and that He is coming to take away the sin of the world." Hundreds of years later, some of the natural branches, the Jews, were broken off because of unbelief, Romans 11:11-29. Think about that, because of unbelief, not because of sinful actions. Because of unbelief, the natural branches were broken off and Zion, the church, consisting of true believers, both Jew and Gentile, has now become the people in whom God dwells. The church is the new sanctuary patterned after the heavenly sanctuary.

The church is the new sanctuary. The old tabernacle was the foreshadowing of Jesus, who made the church possible. God no longer dwells in a building that is made with hands. Now, He dwells in the hearts of believers. Ephesians 2:19-22. The tabernacle was also called the TABERNACLE OF THE MEETING, Exodus 29:42. It was here in the door that God spoke with the people. It was a place to meet with Him. In the tabernacle, man's fellowship with God was symbolized through sacrifices and offerings. Here the sinner was able to meet God and not perish in God's holiness. It is in Jesus that we are able to meet God and not perish in the light of His holiness. Jesus cleansed us and gave us His righteousness so that we may enter the throne room boldly. Jesus is our tent of the meeting. "No man cometh unto the Father but by me." John 14:6. THE TENT OF TESTIMONY, Numbers 9:15. It was at the tabernacle that testimony was given through shadows and types concerning the good things to come. There in the tabernacle, the terms were set forth. The need of a sacrifice and a mediator in order to have communion with God. It is through the Church, the true Church, with Jesus as cornerstone and Lord, that today, you will hear set forth the terms of communion with God. The terms are J-E-S-U-S. Jesus is our sacrifice and our mediator. next Chapter Four |
